Ads and trackers make websites slow and ugly. This is how you stop them to make your general browsing experience more pleasant.
First I suggest watching this uMatrix* 'how to' video:
The Philomath forum initially looks like this:
Banner ad
Hyperlink auditing (VigLink tracker)
1. Install
uBlock Origin and uMatrix.
Now you will see this because it knows you have an adblocker:
Right click it and left click on .
Now click on create:
Now you'll see a super annoying tiny square:
Remove that as well through the same steps as described above.
2. To disable the hyperlink auditing (VigLink redirects)
Right click the uMatrix logo in the top right of your browser:
Enable the last option:
I enable everything because fuck you.
3. Installing uMatrix willbreak [clean] some sites because most of them are cluttered with nonsense
So uMatrix takes the 'better safe than sorry' approach. On this forum the YouTube videos will be disabled, as well as the text editing buttons and LaTeX.
To fix embedded YouTube videos, simply left click the uBlock origin icon, and whitelist youtube.com as well as its scripts (which won't be automatically enabled as you first click to whitelist youtube.com):
To fix the text editing buttons and LaTeX:
Do the same as above but whitelist this:
(Edit: whitelisting this enables the VigLink trackers again! I have not found how to forcefully disable those while keeping the functionality of other non-invasive scripts.)
and this:
If you can not see some of those items, it means they're currently not used on the page you are on.
Enjoy your upgraded knowledge and browsing experience!
*uMatrix is actually µMatrix; pronounced 'micro matrix'.
