I recently started. I love observing nature and trying to make sense of it; what the birds are singing about, how the ecosystem works, etc. Any tips for a beginner hiker? It's very hot in the South right now, so I now know to bring ice packs!

I go for a walk each morning. It's quite relaxing; the smell, the bird songs you talk about, no traffic or abundance of people. Lovely indeed. But I don't think that a morning walk of 30 minutes is considered hiking? Anyway, I did do a hiking trip a couple of years ago. I suggest some patches in case you have blisters, a first aid kit if you hike in the mountains (I used mine to help a person who's leg got hit by a bowling ball sized falling rock; just as the rock hit his leg it stopped in its tracks by another rock, but it gashed him nonetheless), and good shoes. Definitely good boots if rocky, spiky, unstable surfaced mountains are your thing. These are mine, tough as hell: www.lowaboots.com/mens/hiking/renegade-gtx-mid-dark-gray-navyWalking or running shoes can definitely be cheap (my current pair are 12$ and I've never run more comfortable or as fast). They just have to be comfortable. But for the mountains I do suggest buying more expensive tough, durable, stable, and comfortable boots. A guy I know had the same boots that I mentioned above for 10 years, using them constantly.

Thank you! I think your walks qualify for what I like to do. I just love the peace. I've lived in the heart of a city for six years now... I think it's starting to wear on me!

I like to go on hikes on the weekend, but I also go on an hour walk every morning. I enjoy the peace, quiet and nature. I feel It's also when I do some of my best thinking.
